Position Summary
Harris-Stowe State University’s Office of Communications & Marketing is seeking a creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented Digital Media Specialist – Social Media & Storytelling to help shape and share the voice of St. Louis’ only HBCU. This entry-level position manages the University’s social media presence and produces consistent, story-driven content that celebrates the Hornet experience, builds community connection, and advances recruitment and engagement goals. From concept to caption, the Specialist will gather, write, and publish content that highlights student life, academic excellence, and community impact while maintaining brand consistency and authenticity across platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, write, and publish daily/weekly social media content across official University platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube).
- Plan and execute campaigns that support recruitment, retention, events, and institutional storytelling.
- Gather stories, quotes, and visuals from students, faculty, and alumni that reflect the HSSU experience.
- Write and edit short features, event recaps, and spotlight stories for digital and newsletter use.
- Collaborate with the Graphic Designer and Web Specialist to ensure cohesive visual and verbal messaging across platforms.
- Use native and third-party tools (e.g., Sprout Social) to monitor engagement, analyze performance, and recommend adjustments.
- Assist with photo and video shoots, capturing authentic campus moments for digital use.
- Provide on-site and digital coverage for University events, including photography, video, live social updates, and post-event storytelling.
- Represent the University’s values of diversity, inclusion, and belonging through every digital touchpoint.
- Provide event coverage and live updates; assist with other marketing projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.
- At least one year of professional or internship experience in social media management, digital content creation, or related area.
- Excellent writing and storytelling skills with a strong sense of tone, grammar, and audience.
- Familiarity with social media scheduling and analytics tools.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in photography, video editing, or basic graphic design.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, or InDesign) or similar content creation tools.
- Understanding of content marketing, accessibility, and digital engagement strategies.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, creative environment.
